Summary. The MDC technical data sheet SPC-TDS-CHL-001 gives MDC by GC 99.95% min, water 75 ppm max, chloroform 50 ppm max and specific gravity 1.3140 to 1.3190 g/ml at 27 °C, among 12 parameters. Limits describe the grade; the batch Certificate of Analysis shows what a delivery measured. The table below explains what each parameter tells you.
A technical data sheet (TDS) is a table of limits. Reading it well means knowing what each line measures and what a buyer should do with it. This guide goes through the TDS for the Methylene Di Chloride (MDC) (methylene dichloride, dichloromethane, DCM) that Supreme Petro Chemicals supplies from Chennai. The limit values themselves are on the product page; here we explain them. The limits belong to the manufacturer's published specification (TGV SRAAC QSF No. 8.6.4.14), as listed on SPC-TDS-CHL-001. The explanations of what each test means are general chemistry knowledge, labelled as such, and are not additional SPC claims.
TDS, CoA and SDS: which document answers what
| Document | Question it answers |
|---|---|
| Technical Data Sheet (TDS) | What limits does this grade have to meet? |
| Certificate of Analysis (CoA) | What did this batch measure? SPC supplies a batch CoA with every delivery. |
| Safety Data Sheet (SDS) | What are the hazards, and how do I store and handle it? |

Use the TDS when you write your purchase specification and the CoA when you accept a delivery. The two should line up parameter by parameter.
What each of the 12 parameters tells you
| Parameter | What it tells you | What to compare on the CoA |
|---|---|---|
| Appearance | A quick visual check for cloudiness, particles or separated water. | Clear liquid |
| Colour (Hazen) | The Hazen (platinum-cobalt) scale measures faint yellowing. Lower is paler. | Value against the TDS ceiling |
| Specific gravity at 27 °C | A fast identity and consistency check. It depends on temperature. | Value and the temperature it was read at |
| Moisture / water | Dissolved water. Matters for water-sensitive processes. | ppm against the ceiling |
| MDC by GC | The assay: the share of the liquid that is methylene chloride, by gas chromatography. | Percentage against the minimum |
| Chloroform by GC | A related chlorinated compound that can be present as an impurity. | ppm against the ceiling |
| Carbon tetrachloride by GC | Another related chlorinated impurity, held to a very low limit. | ppm against the ceiling |
| Free chlorine | Reactive chlorine that could attack equipment or other ingredients. | Nil |
| Acidity as HCl / alkalinity as NaOH | Acid or base carry-over, which affects corrosion and pH-sensitive use. | Nil |
| Non-volatile matter | The residue left after evaporation. Matters where a clean film is needed. | ppm against the ceiling |
| Distillation range at 1 atm | A narrow range indicates a pure material with little high-boiling contamination. | Share distilling within the stated range |
| Stabiliser | A small additive that limits decomposition. The TDS does not name it. | ppm within the stated range |

Assay: 99.95% is not the whole story
The headline number is the assay by gas chromatography. The assay leaves up to 0.05% (500 ppm) that is not MDC by GC. The TDS sets separate ceilings for water, chloroform, carbon tetrachloride and residue; check those lines for your process. As general knowledge, individual impurity limits are separate specification lines, so a process sensitive to one impurity should read that line, not just the assay.
Water: the line moisture-sensitive buyers check first
The TDS sets a 75 ppm max ceiling; compare the batch CoA value with it. If water matters to your reaction or formulation, tell us your own requirement before ordering.
Chloroform and carbon tetrachloride: process impurities
These two are related chlorinated compounds, held to 50 ppm max and 4 ppm max respectively. If your regulator or customer sets limits on residual solvents or specific impurities, put that limit in your enquiry so we can compare it with the TDS.
Why the density on the TDS looks different from the textbook
The TDS gives a specific gravity range at 27 °C, while the figures most searches find (1.325 g/cm³ reference, 1.322 relative density in our SDS) are at 20 °C. The two are at different temperatures, so they are not directly comparable, and the batch Certificate of Analysis governs a delivery. As general knowledge, liquids expand as they warm, so density at 27 °C is lower than at 20 °C. When you check a delivery with a hydrometer, correct for temperature or measure at the TDS temperature. The product page sets all the density values side by side.
Boiling point and the distillation range
The boiling point of MDC is about 39.6 °C on our product record and 39.8 °C in the SDS. The TDS does not give a single boiling point. Instead it states that more than 95% of the sample distils between 39 and 40.5 °C at 1 atm. As general knowledge, the range is a purity test as much as a physical property, because contamination with higher-boiling material would stretch it.
Using the TDS to write your own specification
- Start from the TDS limits and keep only the parameters that matter to your process.
- Write each limit with its test method and unit, for example water in ppm and assay by GC.
- Mark which parameters you will check on every delivery and which you accept on the CoA alone.
- Send the specification with your enquiry. If it differs from the TDS, we confirm whether it can be supplied before you commit.
The grade SPC supplies is a technical grade: stabilised, 99.95% min by GC. It is not stated as a food or pharmaceutical grade, and SPC states no IP, BP or USP grade of MDC. Pharmaceutical buyers who use MDC as an extraction solvent should send their specification rather than assume the TDS meets it.
What the TDS does not tell you
- It does not name the stabiliser. Tell us in your enquiry if your process is sensitive to additives and we will confirm what information is available.
- It does not state a shelf life.
- It does not show batch results. That is the Certificate of Analysis.
- It carries no price. SPC quotes on enquiry within 4 working hours.
