Which grades of acetone do you supply, and is it pharma, AR or HPLC grade?
We supply acetone in industrial and technical grades only. Assay is 99.5% min by GC on our product data, and the Hindustan Organic Chemicals Limited (HOCL) line is 99.70 wt% min by GC on its TDS. Technical grade is not food grade or pharma grade, and we do not offer or claim IP, BP, USP, AR, LR or HPLC grades.
The two assay figures come from two different documents. 99.5% min by GC is the figure in SPC product data for acetone. 99.70 wt% min by GC is the purity printed on the TDS (SPC-TDS-KET-001) for the HOCL line, whose grade field states IS 170 : 2020. What are the boiling point, density and flash point of acetone?
Acetone boils at 56.05 °C on our product data (56.1 °C in the SDS), has a density of 0.791 g/cm3 at 20 °C, melts at about -95 °C and is miscible with water. Its flash point is -20 °C closed cup on our product data and -18 °C closed cup in the SDS; we show both.
The two documents differ slightly on a few values, and we show each beside its source instead of choosing one. Is acetone flammable, and how should it be stored?
Yes. Acetone is a highly flammable liquid (GHS Flam. Liq. 2, signal word Danger, H225), UN 1090, Class 3, Packing Group II. Store it tightly closed in a cool, dry, well-ventilated place built for flammable liquids, below 30 °C where possible, and ground and bond containers during transfer.
Acetone vapour is about twice as heavy as air, so it collects at low levels and can travel to an ignition source. Use non-sparking tools and explosion-proof equipment, and keep acetone away from strong oxidising agents, strong acids, strong bases and reactive halogens. Acetone or IPA, MEK, ethyl acetate and diacetone alcohol: which solvent?
Among the common cleaning solvents, acetone evaporates very fast and mixes fully with water, and it attacks many plastics. IPA is slower and gentler, MEK is a slower ketone with limited water miscibility, and ethyl acetate is an ester with limited water solubility. Diacetone alcohol is a different, slow-evaporating solvent.
