HSN codes for industrial chemicals
The HSN code of an industrial chemical is its 8-digit tariff item in India's ITC(HS) schedule, the number that goes on customs filings and tax invoices. The table below gives the code for each of the 53 products we supply from Chennai whose code we have checked against the DGFT ITC(HS) schedule, with the CAS number and the tariff description as the schedule words it. Click a product for its specification, TDS, SDS and quote form.
Codes depend on the exact form and grade of the material. This page is a reference, not tax or customs advice. Confirm the code for your consignment with your customs or tax adviser. Related: CAS numbers of the chemicals we supply and the SDS & TDS library.

Products whose code needs confirming
For these products the 8-digit tariff item depends on the exact form or grade. Tell us the grade you need and confirm the code with your customs or tax adviser.
How to read an HSN code
The first 4 digits are the heading, the first 6 follow the international Harmonized System, and India adds the last 2 digits for its own tariff item. For example, 2905 12 20 reads as heading 2905, subheading 2905 12 and tariff item 2905 12 20.
Frequently asked questions
What is an HSN code?
HSN stands for Harmonized System of Nomenclature, the international product-classification system. Each product gets a numeric code that customs authorities and tax systems use to identify it.
What does ITC-HS mean and how does it relate to HSN?
ITC(HS) is India's import and export classification, published by DGFT. It follows the international system for the first 6 digits and adds its own digits to reach 8. The 8-digit code is what this page calls the HSN.
How many digits does an HSN code for a chemical have?
The international system has 6 digits. India's customs tariff uses 8, and these 8-digit codes are what you will see on import documents. The number of digits to show on a tax invoice depends on the supplier's circumstances, so confirm with your tax adviser.
Where do chemicals sit in the tariff?
Most industrial chemicals are in Chapters 28 and 29 (inorganic and organic chemicals). Some products, such as industrial fatty acids, fall in Chapter 38, and resins and polymers are in Chapter 39. The chapter alone does not give the full code, so the exact heading and item matter.
Why can two similar chemicals have different codes?
The tariff lists individual substances. For example, propan-1-ol and isopropyl alcohol are both propyl alcohols but sit on separate lines that differ in the last digits. Choose the line that names the substance, not just the family.
Does the grade or form of a chemical change its HSN code?
It can. A liquid solution and a solid of the same compound may sit on different lines. Grade does not always change the line: in the table above, two glycerol grades share one code. Classify by the exact product that is actually shipped.
Where do I find the HSN code for a chemical?
Start with the ITC(HS) schedule on the DGFT website and the customs tariff. The schedule is organised by chemical name, and CAS numbers are generally not listed in it, so search by name. Your customs house agent or tax adviser confirms the final code.
Can I use the HSN code printed on a supplier's invoice or a website?
Treat it as a reference. The classification you declare is ultimately your own responsibility, so verify it against the schedule for your product and your use.
What happens if the wrong HSN code is declared?
A wrong code can lead to delays at clearance, queries from the authorities and mismatches in tax records. This is why it is worth confirming the code before ordering.
Does a CAS number replace the HSN code?
No. A CAS number identifies a specific chemical substance worldwide. An HSN code classifies a product for tariff and tax purposes. They are different systems, and one HSN line can cover several CAS numbers.
Does this page give duty or tax rates?
No. It lists classification only. Rates change and depend on origin, notifications and your own situation, so check the current position with your customs or tax adviser.
How do I get a quote and a Certificate of Analysis for one of these chemicals?
Send us the product and quantity. We quote within 4 working hours, and a batch Certificate of Analysis is supplied with every delivery.
Where these codes come from
Each code and tariff description was read from the DGFT ITC(HS) schedule and matches the code on the product page. Products whose code we have not verified are not listed with a code. Need a quote? We quote within 4 working hours, and a batch Certificate of Analysis is supplied with every delivery. Contact our team, or source a chemical that is not listed.
