Frequently Asked Questions

What does MIBK stand for?

MIBK is the trade abbreviation for Methyl Iso Butyl Ketone, also written as methyl isobutyl ketone and named 4-methyl-2-pentanone. All three names refer to the same substance, CAS 108-10-1. It is a medium-evaporating ketone solvent with low water miscibility.

What is the CAS number for MIBK?

MIBK has CAS number 108-10-1. For import and GST documentation we classify it under HSN code 29141300. Quote both on your enquiry.

What is MIBK used for?

MIBK is used in nitrocellulose and acrylic lacquers, surface coatings and adhesives, as an extraction solvent in pharmaceutical and metallurgical processing, and in rubber antiozonant manufacture. It is also used in dewaxing. Its low water miscibility is what makes it useful for liquid-liquid extraction.

What grade and specification of MIBK do you supply?

We supply Technical Grade MIBK, Min 99.5%. Our published TDS is written against Kumho P&B Chemicals (South Korea) material, imported via Yeosu. Typical specification: MIBK purity Min 99.5 wt %, water Max 0.1 wt %, colour Max 10 APHA, acidity (as acetic acid) Max 0.002 wt %, initial boiling point Min 114.0 °C, dry point Max 117.0 °C, density 0.799 - 0.802 g/ml at 20°C, appearance clear and bright. The full TDS and SDS are downloadable from this page (document SPC-TDS-KET-003).

What is the difference between MIBK and MEK?

MEK (CAS 78-93-3) is a fast-evaporating ketone solvent with strong dissolving power, used heavily in PU and nitrocellulose coatings, adhesives and printing inks. MIBK (CAS 108-10-1) evaporates more slowly and has low water miscibility, which suits lacquers, surface coatings and liquid-liquid extraction in pharma and metallurgy. We stock both.

How is MIBK packed, stored and supplied from Chennai?

We supply MIBK in 160 kg HDPE/MS drums from our Redhills warehouse in Chennai, with dispatch across South India. MIBK is a flammable liquid: keep it away from heat, sparks and open flame, store in a cool, well-ventilated area away from oxidisers, and use with adequate ventilation while avoiding breathing vapour. Order sizes depend on packaging and current stock — call or WhatsApp +91 86087 80096 for a quote.
