About this product

Paraformaldehyde (CAS 30525-89-4, EC 608-494-5) is the solid polymer of formaldehyde — HO(CH2O)nH — supplied as free-flowing white prills in the nominal 96% grade, aldehyde content 95% min as HCHO. Buyers use it wherever a formaldehyde group is needed without the water that comes with 37% formalin: phenolic, urea, melamine and resorcinol resin manufacture, wood-panel and furniture adhesives, agrochemical intermediates, and coating and binder resins. It depolymerises back to formaldehyde on heating or in water, so it ships and stores as a dry solid and needs no heated tankage. We supply 25 kg bags on pallets from our Redhills, Chennai warehouse, with dispatch across South India. TDS and SDS available on request.

Physical Properties

Appearance
Free-flowing white prills
Purity
≥ 95.0% (aldehyde content as HCHO)
Assay
95.0% min (aldehyde content as HCHO); acidity as HCOOH 0.05% max; moisture 1.0% max. Verify from supplier COA for specific grade.
Density
Specific gravity 1.46 (CAMEO Chemicals entry 4156; Thermo Fisher Scientific SDS §9). Bulk density 700–850 kg/m³ typical of prilled grades (Balaji Formalin published prills TDS)
Flash Point
71°C (CAMEO Chemicals entry 4156, 160°F; Thermo Fisher Scientific SDS §9 — test method not stated in either source). Autoignition 300°C
Boiling Point
Not applicable — depolymerises to formaldehyde gas rather than boiling (no boiling point reported by CAMEO Chemicals or Thermo Fisher Scientific)
Melting Point
120–170°C — softens and depolymerises over a range, not a sharp melting point (Thermo Fisher Scientific SDS §9)
pH
6.0–8.0 (10% aqueous suspension) to the specification quoted on enquiry. Published values for commercial 96% grades are more acidic — 3.5–5.0 (Thermo Fisher Scientific SDS §9) and 4–7 (Balaji Formalin published prills TDS). Verify from supplier COA for specific grade.
Solubility
Dissolves in water with depolymerisation to formaldehyde; slow in cold water, rapid in hot water and accelerated by traces of dilute acid or alkali

Compliance & Storage

HS Code
2912 60 00
UN Number
2213
Hazard Class
Class 4.1 — Flammable solid (Packing Group III)
Storage
Cool, dry, well-ventilated area in sealed original bags, away from heat, ignition sources, direct sunlight and moisture. Segregate from strong oxidisers, strong bases and hydrochloric acid. Operate first-in-first-out — slow depolymerisation in storage raises free formaldehyde and acidity.

These specs are indicative. Request a Certificate of Analysis (COA) for batch-specific values.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the CAS number of paraformaldehyde?

Paraformaldehyde carries CAS number 30525-89-4 and ECHA List number 608-494-5. It has no EINECS entry — the 608- series is an ECHA List number, not an EINECS number. It is not the same listing as formaldehyde solution (CAS 50-00-0), which we stock separately, so specify which one you need on your enquiry.

What is paraformaldehyde used for?

Buyers use paraformaldehyde as a solid formaldehyde source in phenolic, urea, melamine and resorcinol resin manufacture, wood-panel and furniture adhesives, agrochemical and herbicide intermediates, foundry, abrasive and friction-material binders, and coating, paper and textile finishing resins. It is also used in disinfection and fumigation formulations.

What is the specification of 96% paraformaldehyde prills?

We quote the 96% grade as free-flowing white prills with aldehyde content as HCHO 95.0% minimum, acidity as HCOOH 0.05% maximum, moisture 1.0% maximum, and pH 6.0–8.0 in 10% aqueous suspension. Commercial grades vary — published data for 96% prills shows pH in the acidic range and a higher water balance — so batch values are always confirmed on the supplier Certificate of Analysis before we offer. Tell us your controlling parameters on the enquiry and we will match them against what is available.

Why use paraformaldehyde instead of 37% formalin?

The difference is water. Solid 96% prills carry roughly two and a half times the formaldehyde per tonne shipped compared with 37% formalin, need no heated storage, and let a formulator dose formaldehyde into a non-aqueous reaction system. The prills depolymerise back to formaldehyde on heating or in water, and dissolution is accelerated by traces of dilute acid or alkali.

Is paraformaldehyde a hazardous or dangerous good?

Yes. Paraformaldehyde is classified UN 2213, Class 4.1 flammable solid, Packing Group III for transport by road, sea and air, with a flash point of 71°C and autoignition at 300°C. It carries GHS classification Flam. Sol. 2 (H228), Acute Tox. 4 (H302 and H332), Skin Irrit. 2 (H315), Skin Sens. 1 (H317), Eye Dam. 1 (H318), Carc. 2 (H351) and STOT SE 3 (H335), and it can form combustible dust concentrations in air. Critically, contact with hydrochloric acid forms bis(chloromethyl) ether, a potent human carcinogen — never store or handle the two together.
