Frequently Asked Questions
What is the CAS number and chemical formula of sodium sulphite?
Sodium Sulphite carries CAS number 7757-83-7 and the formula Na₂SO₃. It is also written as sodium sulfite (US spelling) and disodium sulphite — the same product under different names.
What purity and specification does your sodium sulphite meet?
We supply Technical Grade sodium sulphite against the manufacturer's published specification: assay 97.0% mass minimum as Na₂SO₃, sodium sulphate (as Na₂SO₄) 2.0% mass maximum, iron (as Fe) 15 ppm maximum, chloride (as NaCl) 0.2% mass maximum, matter insoluble in water 0.05% mass maximum, and loss on drying 1.0% mass maximum. pH of a 10% solution runs 8.5 – 10.5. A branded TDS and MSDS are available on request.
What is the difference between anhydrous sodium sulphite and the heptahydrate?
Anhydrous sodium sulphite is the water-free form, as distinct from the hydrated (heptahydrate) form. We stock the anhydrous technical grade — a white crystalline powder or granules, freely soluble in water and practically insoluble in ethanol.
Is sodium sulphite hazardous or classified as dangerous goods?
No. Sodium sulphite is not classified as dangerous goods, and our specification lists the UN number as "Not regulated". It is hygroscopic and readily oxidises in air, so it still needs closed packaging and careful handling.
How should sodium sulphite be stored, and what is its shelf life?
Store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated area in tightly closed containers, away from acids and oxidisers, and avoid moisture ingress. Shelf life is 24 months from manufacture in sealed packaging.
Do you supply sodium sulphite in Chennai and across South India?
Yes. We have traded and distributed industrial chemicals from Chennai since 1997, with stock held at our Redhills warehouse and our office at Periyamet, and we dispatch across South India. Sodium sulphite ships in bags, lead time ex-stock to 3 working days; order sizes depend on packaging and current stock. Call or WhatsApp +91 86087 80096 for a quote.
