Magnesium Nitrate

The main industrial use is as a dehydrating agent in the concentration of nitric acid. It is also used as a chloride-free water-soluble magnesium and nitrate-nitrogen fertiliser for fertigation, drip and foliar application and in greenhouse and hydroponic growing, as a precursor to high-purity magnesium oxide and catalyst supports, as an oxidiser in pyrotechnic compositions, and as a laboratory reagent.

CAS 13446-18-9 — that is magnesium nitrate hexahydrate, Mg(NO3)2·6H2O, the commercial white-crystal article and the form we supply. The anhydrous salt is a different substance with its own CAS number, so state which form you need on your enquiry and we will quote against it. The hexahydrate is hygroscopic, which is why it is packed in lined bags.

Magnesium dinitrate and "nitric acid, magnesium salt" are the same substance, and the naturally occurring hexahydrate mineral is named nitromagnesite; buyers often shorten it to mag nitrate or magnesium nitrate crystals. The formula for the grade we supply is written Mg(NO3)2·6H2O. Fertiliser buyers also see it described simply as a water-soluble magnesium fertiliser.

Our published sheet covers the technical / industrial grade at 98.0% minimum assay as Mg(NO3)2·6H2O. A water-soluble fertiliser grade is also listed; the analysis available against it is confirmed on the supplier COA on enquiry. Assay, moisture and water-insoluble matter are confirmed against the supplier COA for the consignment, because the 98.0% basis is the specification we work to rather than a supplier-confirmed market standard. Reference physical values are melting point 89°C (water of crystallisation is lost above 90°C), decomposition at approximately 330°C without boiling, and density 1.46 g/cm³ at 20°C. Aqueous pH is grade-dependent — approximately 6.0 on typical commercial grade, with published supplier SDS figures spanning 5–7 at 50 g/L and 5.0–8.2 at 5% aqueous. No flash point is assigned: it is a non-combustible inorganic oxidising salt that does not burn itself but can intensify a fire. Water solubility is high — 420 g/L at 20°C on published supplier SDS data, with other published figures materially higher — plus free solubility in alcohol. The HSN code for magnesium nitrate is 2834 29 20. Quote it alongside CAS 13446-18-9 on GST invoices and customs documentation, and confirm the line with your customs house agent against the current tariff schedule.

Published SDS disagree on this material, so treat the transport classification as unsettled. One of the three supplier SDS reviewed assigns UN 1474, Class 5.1, Packing Group III; the other two declare the hexahydrate not regulated for transport. Our own SDS takes the conservative position — oxidising solid Ox. Sol. 3 (H272, may intensify fire) with Eye Irrit. 2 (H319) — and we do not present the transport class as settled. We take the class in writing from the delivered supplier's SDS and confirm it with the carrier before booking freight. Handle and store it as an oxidiser regardless: segregate it from combustibles, reducing agents, organics and powdered metals.

Standard packing is 25 kg HDPE/PP woven bags with an LDPE inner liner, palletised. The liner matters: the hexahydrate is hygroscopic and cakes if it is breached.
