Magnesium Nitrate

Its classic industrial use is as a dehydrating agent in the concentration of nitric acid. It is also used as a chloride-free water-soluble magnesium and nitrate-nitrogen fertiliser for fertigation, drip and foliar application and in greenhouse and hydroponic growing, as a precursor to high-purity magnesium oxide and catalyst supports, as an oxidiser in pyrotechnic compositions, and as a laboratory reagent. Its 89°C melting point also makes the hexahydrate a phase-change material for latent-heat thermal storage.

The commercial white-crystal article is magnesium nitrate hexahydrate, Mg(NO3)2·6H2O, CAS 13446-18-9, molecular weight 256.41, PubChem CID 202877. The anhydrous salt is a different CAS, 10377-60-3, and is not stable as free-flowing crystals because it takes up water from the air. EC number 233-826-7 is the single European entry — ECHA registers it against the anhydrous CAS, and hexahydrate supplier SDS cite the same EC number. State which form you need on your enquiry.

The grade we quote is white crystals with 98.0% minimum assay as Mg(NO3)2·6H2O and an aqueous pH of approximately 6.0. Reference physical values are melting point 89°C, density 1.46 g/cm³ at 20°C, and decomposition at approximately 330°C. Bulk density and a single water-solubility figure are grade-dependent — verify from the supplier COA for the specific grade. A branded TDS and SDS are available on request (document SPC-TDS-PWD-033).

The specific 8-digit line is 2834 29 20 (nitrites and nitrates — nitrates — other — magnesium nitrate), attracting 18% GST. The residual line for other nitrates is 2834 29 90, in the same chapter at the same GST rate. Confirm the line with your customs house agent against the current tariff schedule.

The GHS position is disputed and we publish the conservative one. PENTA s.r.o. classifies it Ox. Sol. 3 (H272, may intensify fire) and Eye Irrit. 2 (H319), signal word Warning, pictograms GHS03 and GHS07. Chem-Supply Australia classifies Ox. Sol. 3 (H272) only. Fisher Chemical states the substance is not considered hazardous under OSHA HazCom 2012, and ECHA's substance record notes that while the anhydrous form is classified as an oxidising solid Category 3, the hexahydrate does not need to be classified for that hazard. Transport is equally split: PENTA declares UN 1474, Class 5.1, Packing Group III, while Fisher Chemical and Chem-Supply declare the hexahydrate not regulated under DOT, TDG, ADG, IMDG and IATA. We take the transport class in writing from the delivered supplier's SDS before booking freight.
