What Is VAM?
VAM has CAS number 108-05-4 and molecular formula C4H6O2. It is a clear, flammable, reactive liquid with a boiling point of approximately 72.7°C. Because it polymerises readily, commercial VAM is supplied with a stabiliser — usually hydroquinone — to prevent premature polymerisation during storage and transport.
Industrial Applications
- Polyvinyl acetate (PVA): The largest single use. PVA emulsions feed wood glue, white glue, and packaging adhesives.
- Adhesives: VAM-derived polymers are core to water-based and hot-melt adhesive systems.
- Paints and emulsions: Vinyl acetate copolymers act as binders in emulsion paints.
- EVA: Ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymers used in footwear, films, and hot-melt formulations.
- Textiles and paper: Coatings, sizing, and finishing applications.
Inhibitor and Handling Notes
VAM is supplied stabilised, but the inhibitor is consumed over time and is less effective at higher temperatures. Store VAM cool, away from heat, sunlight, oxidisers, and ignition sources, and respect the supplier's recommended shelf life. Never let stored material run warm or stagnate beyond its rated period. Follow the SDS for flammability and reactive-monomer precautions.
