Hexane (Food Grade)

Food grade hexane is a commercial hexane fraction whose principal component is n-hexane (CAS 110-54-3), supplied as a clear colourless liquid in Food / Pharma Grade (IS 3470). Supreme Petro Chemicals is a Chennai trader and bulk distributor, not a manufacturer, and supplies it from CPCL, Bharat Petroleum (BPCL) and Reliance Industries.

Because it is a fraction, not a single pure substance, the composition varies by batch within the specification: n-hexane is at least 44.0 wt% and total saturates at least 98.5 %V. The CAS number on our documents is that of n-hexane, the principal component.

Food grade hexane is a different product from cyclohexane (CAS 110-82-7, which has its own SPC product page). Technical grade is not food or pharma grade.

We supply one hexane grade on this page: Food / Pharma Grade (IS 3470). We do not list a technical-grade hexane under this product, and technical grade is not food or pharma grade.

In general, a food grade is defined by what is limited. Here benzene, total aromatics, non-volatile residue, lead and sulphur all carry written maximums and the boiling range is a tight cut. As general knowledge, a general-purpose industrial hexane fraction is not sold against limits like these, which is why the two are not interchangeable.

The limits on our TDS come from CPCL test reports for food grade (Oct 2025) and pharma grade (Mar 2026) hexane, cross-checked against IS 3470:2017. They are limits, not typical values; the batch Certificate of Analysis supplied with every delivery carries the measured values for your consignment.

The table is the limit set on our TDS, not a typical value. Benzene is limited to 0.050 %V maximum and aromatics to 0.070 %V maximum.

Food grade hexane is used as an extraction solvent where a low-benzene, low-residue, tight-boiling cut is required.

In general, a low boiling range lets a solvent be stripped from the extract by distillation, and a low residue limit keeps it from leaving a non-volatile film. Confirm the grade and your regulator's requirements for your own process before ordering.

As general knowledge, commercial hexane is often written hexanes because it is a fraction. Ours has n-hexane as the principal component, so it is not pure n-hexane. Cyclohexane is a different compound with a different CAS number.

We supply food grade hexane in drums or by bulk tanker from Chennai.

Yes. Hexane is a highly flammable liquid: store it cool and ventilated, away from ignition sources, with containers closed and equipment grounded during transfer.

• The SPC Hexane SDS (Rev 3.1) is written for hexane / n-hexane. It lists H225 (highly flammable liquid and vapour) and H304 (may be fatal if swallowed and enters airways), signal word DANGER. See the MSDS on this page for the full list.
• Use non-sparking tools and explosion-proof equipment; avoid breathing vapours.
• Store in tightly closed, compatible containers in a cool, dry, well-ventilated area, below 30 °C recommended, away from strong oxidisers.
• The SDS gives a flash point of -23 °C (closed cup) as a literature value for hexane; the food grade fraction can differ slightly, so use the batch documents for your plant's hazard assessment.
• Segregate from food, drink and animal feed and from incompatible chemicals, even though this is a food grade solvent.
