About this product

Iso-Butanol — also known as isobutanol, isobutyl alcohol or 2-methyl-1-propanol (CAS 78-83-1) — is a branched-chain butanol used as a solvent in paints, coatings and printing inks and as a feedstock for isobutyl esters. We stock BPCL Commercial Grade, 99.5% min purity, at our Redhills, Chennai warehouse and dispatch across South India in MS/HDPE drums or by bulk road tanker. Not to be confused with n-Butanol (NBA, CAS 71-36-3), the straight-chain isomer, which we also stock.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is iso-butanol used for?

Iso-butanol is mainly used as a solvent in paints, lacquers, coatings and printing inks, and as a feedstock for isobutyl acetate and other ester solvents. We supply commercial-grade material for these applications from our Redhills, Chennai warehouse across South India.

Is isobutanol the same as isobutyl alcohol?

Yes. Iso-butanol, isobutanol, isobutyl alcohol and 2-methyl-1-propanol are all the same chemical, sometimes abbreviated IBA. Its CAS number is 78-83-1.

What is the CAS number and HSN code of iso-butanol?

The CAS number of iso-butanol (isobutyl alcohol) is 78-83-1. Its HSN code is 2905 14 00.

What is the difference between iso-butanol and n-butanol?

They are different isomers of butanol. Iso-butanol (2-methyl-1-propanol, CAS 78-83-1) is the branched isomer, while n-butanol (NBA, CAS 71-36-3) is the straight-chain isomer. We stock both — n-Butanol (NBA) has its own product page.

What grade and purity of iso-butanol does SPC supply?

We supply Commercial Grade iso-butanol sourced from BPCL's Kochi Refinery complex. Purity is 99.5% min by mass with water content 0.10% max, per the manufacturer's published specification. The full TDS is available on this page.

Can I buy iso-butanol in drums or bulk tankers in Chennai?

Yes. We dispatch from our Redhills, Chennai warehouse in MS/HDPE drums or by bulk road tanker across South India. It is a Class 3 flammable liquid (UN 1212), and order sizes depend on packaging and current stock — call or WhatsApp +91 86087 80096 for a quote.
