Sodium Bromate

Sodium bromate is the sodium salt of bromic acid — formula NaBrO3 (also written BrNaO3), CAS 7789-38-0 — supplied as a white crystalline powder and a strong inorganic oxidiser. It is supplied anhydrous; no hydrate of sodium bromate is registered in ECHA CHEM or PubChem. Its main industrial use is in textile dyeing.

Sodium bromate's principal industrial use is as an oxidising agent in textile dyeing, where it oxidises sulphur and vat dyes in continuous and batch dye development. It is also mixed with sodium bromide to dissolve gold from its ores, used in boiler cleaning, used as an analytical reagent for oxidimetric (bromatometric) titration, and used as the oxidiser in hair-care neutraliser formulations, including permanent-wave neutralisers.

Sodium bromate carries CAS number 7789-38-0 and EC number 232-160-4, with the chemical formula NaBrO3 (BrNaO3) and a molecular weight of 150.89 g/mol. It is also listed as bromic acid sodium salt and as sodium bromate(V). We publish only CAS 7789-38-0.

The Technical Grade specification we quote against reads 99.50% mass minimum assay as NaBrO3 and moisture 0.50% mass maximum, on a white crystalline powder (colourless cubic crystals). Both are specification limits confirmed on the producer's Certificate of Analysis for the consignment supplied, and matter insoluble in water and bulk density are verified from that COA for the specific grade. Typical physical values are relative density 3.34 (water = 1), water solubility 36.4 g/100 mL at 20 °C, neutral pH in aqueous solution, refractive index 1.594 and decomposition at 381 °C with evolution of oxygen. No flash point is assigned: the material does not itself burn, but it liberates oxygen and intensifies the burning of surrounding combustibles. Grade suitability for a given end use — a hair-care neutraliser formulation, for instance — has to be checked against the producer's specification and COA before use. No — these are three different salts, and the names must not be swapped on orders, COAs or safety documents. Sodium bromate is NaBrO3, CAS 7789-38-0, the oxidising salt we supply. Sodium bromide is a different material — it is the salt blended with sodium bromate in gold leaching, not an alternative to it. Potassium bromate is KBrO3, CAS 7758-01-2 — a separate substance with its own registration, its own regulatory entry and its own safety documentation. Do not read either salt's classification across to the other in either direction; work from the SDS for the material you are actually buying. Neither sodium bromide nor potassium bromate is a catalogue product for us.

Store sodium bromate in a cool, dry, well-ventilated area in sealed UN-certified bags on pallets, per NFPA 430 for solid oxidisers. It is a strong oxidiser — it liberates oxygen in a fire and accelerates the burning of surrounding combustibles — so segregate it from organics, oils, jute, sawdust, sugar, sulphur, metal powders, carbon, acids, ammonium compounds and reducing agents, and avoid dust generation and inhalation. In transport it is UN 1494, Class 5.1, Packing Group II, classification code O2, tunnel restriction code (E). Carry it in closed or sheeted vehicles and containers cleaned of combustible residue before loading. Confirm marine pollutant status against the carrier's current IMDG edition before a sea booking.
