Sodium Ligno Sulphonate

Sodium lignosulphonate is used mainly as the base from which concrete water-reducing (plasticising) admixtures are formulated, and as a dispersant or binder elsewhere — dyestuffs and pigments, agrochemical wettable powders (WP) and water-dispersible granules (WDG), drilling-mud thinning, foundry sand and ore pelletisation, ceramic deflocculation, animal-feed pellet binding where a feed-grade lot is supplied, and dust suppression on unpaved roads. The powder is a raw material for those formulations rather than a finished admixture, so work to your own formulation specification and to the supplier COA for the grade you buy.

CAS 8061-51-6 and HSN 3804 00 10. The CAS index name is lignosulfonic acid, sodium salt. Lignosulphonates are UVCB substances — of Unknown or Variable composition, Complex reaction products or Biological materials — so composition varies with the pulping liquor and the producer, which is why each lot is supplied against the producer's Certificate of Analysis.

Yes — sodium lignosulphonate, sodium lignosulfonate and our catalogue spelling sodium ligno sulphonate are the same material, CAS 8061-51-6. It is also traded as sulphonated lignin, lignin sulfonate, lignosulphonic acid sodium salt and 'ligno powder', and Borresperse NA is a producer trade-name grade of sodium lignosulphonate powder — naming a producer's trade grade does not by itself mean an equivalent match, so state the specification you need on the enquiry. Take care with the abbreviation 'SLS' in the Indian trade: it collides with sodium lauryl sulphate, so confirm the full chemical name on the order.

They measure two different things and appear as separate rows on the spec sheet. Dry substance (95.0% mass min on the technical powder grade we supply) is the non-water solids content. Active matter is the lignosulphonate content within it (68.0% mass min). A dry-matter figure from another offer is therefore not comparable to an active-matter figure — check which basis a competing spec is quoting before you compare. The material is a light brown to dark brown free-flowing powder, fully water-soluble. pH is grade-dependent: the producer reference grade runs 7–10 on a 10% aqueous solution against a sales specification of 8.3 ± 0.8, unneutralised grades run lower, and the governing figure is the one verified from the supplier COA for the specific grade.

Sodium lignosulphonate is a different salt from calcium lignosulphonate and ammonium lignosulphonate, and desulfonated or sulfomethylated grades are chemically modified derivatives again — they are not interchangeable, so confirm which one your formulation calls for and quote the CAS on the order. Against the synthetic products, lignosulphonate is the older normal water-reducer or plasticiser class that Indian admixture buyers compare with SNF (sulphonated naphthalene formaldehyde) and PCE (polycarboxylate ether) superplasticisers. Handle it as a combustible organic dust — avoid dust generation and accumulation — and store it cool, dry and covered, with bags sealed, palletised and off the floor, because the powder picks up moisture and cakes. For transport it is not classified as a dangerous good under ADR, IMDG or IATA, and no UN number is assigned. There is no CLP Annex VI harmonised classification, and published supplier data reports the substance as not classified. Our own SDS carries a precautionary Eye Irrit. 2 (H319) label.
