SHMP

SHMP is the standard industry abbreviation for Sodium Hexametaphosphate, a white phosphate powder or granule with the formula commonly written (NaPO3)6. It functions as a sequestrant, binding calcium and magnesium ions in hard water, which is why it is used as a detergent builder, a scale inhibitor in water treatment, and a dispersant in slurries.

The CAS number is 10124-56-8 and the HSN code is 2835 39 00. It is also traded under the synonyms sodium polymetaphosphate and Graham's salt.

SHMP is used as a builder and sequestrant in detergent powders, liquid detergents, household cleaners and industrial or institutional cleaning chemistry, typically alongside STPP, sodium silicate and EDTA. In water treatment it controls scale and corrosion by chelating calcium and magnesium, and in ceramic and mineral processing it acts as a deflocculant and dispersant.

We stock Technical Grade SHMP with total phosphate (as P2O5) of 68.0% mass minimum, per the manufacturer's published specification from Aditya Birla Group. The same specification lists inactive phosphate 7.5% mass max, pH 5.8 to 6.8 in 1% solution, iron (Fe) 0.05% max and water insoluble matter 0.06% max. Both are phosphate-based detergent builders that sequester calcium and magnesium in hard water, and formulators frequently use them together with sodium silicate and EDTA. SHMP is the polymeric metaphosphate, favoured where scale control and dispersion matter, such as water treatment and mineral slurries.
